Let us be honest, Sutherland is a cold place in the winter. I lived there for 16 years and had some pretty cold times.
When you watch the weather report on the TV the temperatures they refer to is that of the village. Up at the observatory several hundered meters higher it can be completely different. When it is cloudless it is much colder in the village than up at the observatory. If it is overcast and windy then the observatory is not the place to be.
